Easy access to the World Cup with new mobility information service (PR)
Innovative fare information system for Munich's public transport utility MVV in operation for the start of the World Cup
Right on time before the opening game of the World Cup, the Berlin software development company IVU Traffic Technologies AG has delivered a new system to provide information about public transport fares in Munich. Customers who want to travel with Munich's urban and underground rail systems (S-Bahn and U-Bahn) and are using the internet to look for the best connections are not only shown the possible departure times and the routes, but also the various alternative fares. The passenger can decide on the best option before they start their trip; this then makes things much easier for them when they are at the ticket machine. The new "Tarifberater" fare information system came into operation this week. It represents a first step in the modernisation of the mobility services offered by the MVV public transport utility in Munich. The system, which has so far been introduced for the main lines of the urban and underground railway systems, was ordered by the MVV with the support of funding from the Bavarian State government. Further development stages are planned. The aim is not only to provide timetable information for the entire Munich conurbation, but also to provide guidance about the available fare options. This means that before they leave home customers can see for example whether it might be more economical to travel after the rush-hour period, or to combine a number of activities and buy a day-ticket. A user-friendly interface makes this an attractive and convenient new on-line service.
"We are pleased that with this new fare information system we are able to contribute to making public transport more attractive", said Dr. Olaf Schemczyk, member of the executive board of IVU. "In particular we are pleased that the new "Tarifberater" system will be up and running during the World Cup."
In a second stage, the new system will be extended so that it will show the fares charged for any trip using all available modes of public transport over the entire MVV catchment area. It will then be possible to identify the most economic options taking into account special rates for children, young people and senior citizens, as well as off-peak reductions, group and family tickets, and surcharges for bicycles, baggage, or dogs.
If the system proves successful with customers then it is possible that a third, technically more demanding phase could be implemented. The "Tarifberater" will then be able to offer information about the most cost-effective trip routes to suit the individual mobility wishes. A customer will enter various trips and the time window within which they have to be made. The system will then calculate the possible combinations and makes proposals for the travel times and tickets required, so that the customer can make an informed decision about which option seems most appropriate.
