MICROBUS® for 2,200 postal buses in Austria
ÖBB-Postbus GmbH chooses IVU’s best-selling planning system
ÖBB-Postbus GmbH has ordered the MICROBUS system from IVU Traffic Technologies AG. The Berlin-based software company emerged as the top contender in a Europe-wide bid. A key consideration was the fact that MICROBUS is the only system on the market that can generate integrated duty and vehicle schedules in a single pass. This is a substantial advantage, particularly in regional transport service.ÖBB-Postbus GmbH is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Österreichische Bundesbahnen and operates 940 routes in Austria. 2,200 buses transport 245 million customers each year, making the company the Austrian market leader in the regional public transport (road traffic) segment. “Following the merger between Postbus and BahnBus, we optimised our business processes and wanted to find a software system that would best support our new core processes and be available for immediate implementation,“ said DI Gerold Namestek, project manager at ÖBB-Postbus GmbH. “In IVU, we have found a highly professional partner who can meet our very specific requirements and specifications.” Namestek expects MICROBUS to help substantially lower production costs, improve operability for users and noticeably increase quality where customers are concerned. IVU will supply ÖBB-Postbus GmbH with the timetable, vehicle and duty scheduling as well as rostering modules and customise them IVU Traffic Technologies AG
according to specifications. MICROBUS will also support the future optimisation of timetables, vehicles and duty rosters.
Deutsche Bahn has been using MICROBUS for its 25 regional bus companies for the past year and plans the every day operation of 12,000 buses. The system, which has become the benchmark and market leader in Europe, was extensively redeveloped during the course of this project to meet the special needs of regional transport service. Thanks to the integrated duty and vehicle scheduling function, planners can plan all duty rosters and vehicle schedules in a single operation, a feature that can save a great deal of time and money. MICROBUS can even handle multiple-day vehicle schedules without problems. The system also manages printed matter, which substantially reduces costs at the regional bus companies operated by Deutsche Bahn. These companies serve over 14,000 bus stops and use timetables that vary widely in their visual design. MICROBUS can also manage different pay rates as early as the duty scheduling stage and prepare the data for payroll accounting later on.
The conditions under which regional transport companies operate can sometimes be quite different than those of their urban counterparts. The region covered is much larger geographically and has many more bus stops. Vehicles are spread out among multiple depots and frequently have to be parked at a distant location. In many cases, the territory covers more than one federal state, which means that regional boundaries have to be taken into account when planning networks and timetables or scheduling vehicles. When scheduling duty rosters, planners must keep in mind that the company often has to deal with different pay rates. Drivers cannot always change shifts at the depot, while the service on many rural routes is less frequent and regular than in urban areas. Trip validities in regional service are often much more complex than in an urban setting and must be handled with far greater flexibility. For example, trips may cross territory governed by different regional authorities, and service may be seasonal. MICROBUS covers all these functions. For more information please contact:
