PTX Specification Version 2.0: IVU and partners establish a standard interface for communication using C-ITS/V2X

Berlin, 15th January 2026 | Together with seven project partners, IVU Traffic Technologies AG defined a standardised interface between V2X On-Board Units and ITCS On-Board Computers in buses and trams. The new PTX specification version 2.0 allows a manufacturer-neutral collaboration between both system environments.

In public transport, every minute counts for punctuality and connections. This is where the PTX specification comes into play. It regulates the exchange of real-time data between the ITCS On-Board Computer and a V2X On-Board Unit (OBU), which communicates wirelessly with traffic lights and transport hubs. The On-Board Computer provides the OBU with operational information. For example, the on-board computer software IVU.cockpit shows driving personnel when the next green phase begins, or at what speed the vehicle will reach the next green traffic light. The OBU handles communication with infrastructure via C-ITS/V2X.

The PTX specification version 2.0 is the result of a joint development project between IVU Traffic Technologies AG and seven other companies in the industry. ITCS suppliers contribute their expertise in mapping complex public transport operations, while V2X specialists concentrate on wireless technology and traffic signals. This new standard interface connects both worlds and allows transport companies to have a wider scope in influencing traffic signals. Rather than punctually sending individual operation requests, the vehicle continuously exchanges information with the traffic signal. In this way, PTX enables separated procurement and independent exchange between ITCS On-Board Computers and V2X On-Board Units. This is simultaneously a response to the foreseeable discontinuation of analogue radio solutions.

 “We are closing a central gap in the market with PTX specification version 2.0”, says Michael Groten, Head of Device Development at IVU Traffic Technologies AG. “Together with our partners, we have defined an industry standard for the interface between ITCS On-Board Computers and V2X On-Board Units, which was missing until now. We are therefore boosting the flexibility of transport companies.”
